Why do we need to plant more trees?

Tree canopy in Fond du Lac covers 16.88% of our land surface according to DNR aerial maps from 2013.  According to the nonprofit American Forests, a a 40-60% tree canopy is attainable in ideal conditions in a forested state like Wisconsin.  Since 2013, at least 5000 ash trees have died or are dying in Fond du Lac public spaces.  There is additional ash tree loss on private properties.  Recent studies have proven that the restoration of trees remains among the most effective strategies for climate change mitigation.

Why plant Wisconsin native trees?

Native trees have evolved over time to adapt to local conditions.  They provide essential benefits to wildlife that have evolved along with them.  Native trees provide habitat for insects, birds and pollinators which are essential to life on earth.

What are we doing and how can you help?

  • In early 2020 we kicked off our project by giving away 1,400 free Wisconsin native tree seedlings. Thanks so much to those who sent in pictures of their new trees!

  • In the month of August we worked out a deal with a local nursery to offer discounted saplings.

  • We offered those who purchased and planted their own trees the ability to register their plantings and they counted towards our 2,020 goal.

  • Haentze Floral and Garden Center helped support this effort by offering 20% off their in-stock trees.

With all the challenges that we faced in 2020, we’re really proud of the progress we made in Fond du Lac and all the interest we’ve had in our project! We helped plant almost 1,700 trees in 2020! Thanks to you all!

Things to be aware of.

The city of Fond du Lac requires permission before any tree is planted on city owned property (typically the terrace between the sidewalk and street). Please email the Fond du Lac City Arborist at bweed@fdl.wi.gov for more information before planting any tree or bush on city owned property.
